Harrisburg Public Housing History

From Calobe Jackson, Jr., August 6, 2003
Good to see your letter on Harrisburg. Some of the things that might interest you: The Neighborhood Center is still in operation. It was formerly the Mission on 7th street that you mentioned. A book has been published on the history of the center. Also the "Projects" were known as "Sugar Hill," when they opened in 1939. C. Sylvester Jackson was a member of the Housing Authority and named the projects for Professor William Howard Day.  Day was President of the Harrisburg School Board when C. Sylvester Jackson was a student at Harrisburg High in 1895. Now another high rise public housing unit at 6th and Calder is named for C. Sylvester Jackson.

It is interesting to see what a person remembers from youth. Write some more!

These letters all tell of a Harrisburg that is long gone.
