William G. Jefferson and Felton Grammar School
From Calobe Jackson, Jr., July 17, 2003
Just found a picture that includes William Gus Jefferson as one of several honor students graduating from Felton Grammar School in 1911. Seventy-six students graduated that year and were promoted to high school. Now Jefferson graduated as Salutatorian of the 1915 class, four years later, and became a physician. This leads one to believe that Steelton schools at this time had 13 years of school as did Harrisburg until 1919. The format was 5 years elementary, 4 years grammar and Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior years for high school. The grammar school may not have been totally segregated. Jefferson may have been admitted because of his excellent scholarship.
Editor's note: A list of the African American graduates of Steelton High School for the years 1885-1930 may be found by clicking here.
