Notes: Sam escaped from Taylor in July 1800. Taylor placed the following ad seeking to recover him several months later:
Thirty Dollars Reward.
RAN away, on the 20th of July last, from the Subscriber, living in Westmoreland county, State of Pennsylvania, a Negro Man, named SAM; about 45 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high; is higher nosed than Negroes in general, very black, and grey headed. He had on, when he went away, a half-worn fur Hat, a brown Coat of middling fine cloth, striped Jacket, of a Marseilles yellow ground, a pair of snuff-coloured velvet Overalls, worsted Stockings, fine Shoes, and a fine Shirt. He can play on the Fiddle; is polite and talkative, especially when he drinks any liquor. He has been brought up to wagoning, and is fonder of it than any other business.

It is supposed he has obtained a forged Pass, and is gone towards Philadelphia, as he was bred there; or, otherwise, to Hagerstown, as he was well acquainted with some free Blacks living near the Town.

Twenty dollars reward will be given to any person who secures said Negro in any Jail, so that his Master may get him again, or 30 dollars if brought home, and reasonable charges.
