Notes: Registration includes title of "Reverend." Rev. Finley registered slaves on two separate occasions, first in December, 1781, and again in August, 1782. In his will, dated December 13, 1794, Reverend James Finley, according to one source, specified that four of his enslaved people, Nan, Bet Jr., Toby and Plato Jr., "be set at liberty upon plan I freed their parents." (Source: "Abstracts of Wills of Westmoreland County," in Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine,
Vol. V, No. 3 [March 1914], p. 345.) However that may be contradicted by the notes of present-day researcher Tom Bay, who sends the following extracted information regarding the slaves mentioned in the will:
Negro wenches Nan and Bet, Jr. shall serve sons Samuel R. and Michael until they are 30; Negro men Toby and Pluto, Jr. shall serve sons Joseph and William until they are 29; mulatto shall serve son in law John Robison until freed by law; other Negro children shall serve wife Hannah and sons Robert and Michael until they are 28.
