URR NEWS: WORKSHOP IN LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, JANUARY 2007; CONFERENCE IN ALBANY, NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 2007

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD CONFERENCE, ALBANY, NY, FEBRUARY 23-24, 2007: UNCOVERING THE VOICES OF WOMEN

The Sixth Annual Underground Railroad Conference, sponsored by the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region, will be held at the College of St. Rose, Albany, New York, February 23-25, 2007. The theme of this year's conference is "Underground Railroad: Uncovering the Voices of Women" with featured speakers Cheryl LaRoche, Judith Wellman, Kate Clifford Larson and Delores M. Walters, and a full schedule of workshops, panels and performances on the Underground Railroad.

The flyer for this event describes it as "the foremost educational event in the nation, offering an extraordinary combination of scholarship, grassroots involvement and community engagement. This year's conference, focusing on the voices of women of the Underground Railroad is pioneering, unique and not to be missed." [Having had the opportunity of attending this conference in the past, I can attest to the accuracy of this statement.]

LANCASTER COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, WORKSHOP, JANUARY 18, 2007

The Pennsylvania Underground Railroad Colloquium and the Christiana (PA) Historical Society are presenting a "Lancaster County Chautauqua" Workshop on Thursday, January 18, 2007, 3 to 7 pm.

"A free workshop for historians, cultural heritage and tourism planners and developers; living history players, guides, docents; front-line visitor center and museum staff; other kindred practitioners and professionals from the South Central Pennsylvania region."

The focus appears to be on the Underground Railroad, with presentations by Sheri Jackson and Karen James on "Developing Characters from Original Documents and Source Materials, the Hasty Sisters of New York will present portions of a performance work "Under the Lackawanna Moon" which is "based on the real life stories of Underground Railroad agents buried in the Hickory Grove Cemetery in the historic town of Waverly, Lackawanna County," and Lenwood Sloan, presenting a workshop in 19th century movements, mores and etiquette.
