PROGRAMS AT DELAWARE STATE UNIVERSITY, DOVER, DELAWARE, MARCH 16 AND 21, 2006

Paul Finkelman, University of Tulsa Law School, will speak on "Frederick Douglass, Reformer" at Delaware State University, on Thursday, March 16, 2006, at 11 a.m. to noon, and 6:30 to 8:00, at the MBNA Building, Room 309; and Kate Clifford Larson, Simmons College, will speak on "Harriet Tubman: Feminist and Woman's Rights Advocate," on Tuesday, March 21, 2006, 11-12, in the MLK Center, Glass Lounge, and 6:30- 8:00 in MBNA, Room 309.

CHRISTIANA (PENNSYLVANIA) HISTORICAL SOCIETY, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 2006

Christopher Densmore, Friends Historical Library, will be speaking on R.C. Smedley and the Underground Railroad in Southern Lancaster County to the Christiana Historical Society at the Christiana Borough Hall, on Wednesday, March 8, at 7:30 pm.

PENNSYLVANIA BLACK HISTORY CONFERENCE, HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, MAY 4-6, 2006

The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has sponsored an annual conference on Black History in Pennsylvania for almost three decades. The 2005 conference was held in Philadelphia:

The 2006 conference, scheduled for May 4-6, 2006, will be held in Harrisburg. So, please think about coming if you can--those of us who can make it to that event could do some more sharing of research and some face-to-face planning for the deepening of the "Borderless History Project."

LEHRMAN CENTER POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS

The Gilder Lehrman Center announces the Slavery, Abolition, and Resistance Fellowship Program for the academic year 2006-2007. The Fellowship Program is designed to support established and younger scholars in researching projects that can be linked to the aims of the GLC. Three-month fellowships with a stipend of $10,000 each, and one-month fellowships with a stipend of $3,000 each are available for the academic year. Scholars currently holding the Ph.D. are invited to apply for either term of fellowship. Fellows will be expected to participate in the intellectual life of the GLC and the larger Yale community, and to acknowledge the support of the GLC and the Yale Center for International and Area Studies in publications and lectures that stem from research conducted during the fellowship term. In addition, Fellows will be expected to offer one public lecture during their tenure at Yale. Additional lectures may be scheduled with mutual agreement and interest but would not be required. The application deadline is April 3.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD PROGRAMS AT THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN HISTORIANS ANNUAL MEETING AT WASHINGTON, DC, APRIL 20-22, 200

The Organization of American Historians and the National Council on Public History are holding a joint annual meeting in Washington, DC, from April 19 to 22, 2006. The program includes several sessions specifically on Underground Railroad topics including a session on "Freedom Seeking Slaves West of the Mississippi" with presentations on Iowa, Missouri and Arkansas; "Retelling a National Story: The Underground Railroad in Public and Academic History" with presentations on Harriet Tubman (Kate Larson), Pennsylvania research (Karen James) and borders (Scott Hancock); "Finding Freedom: Self-Determination, Emigration and Transnational Struggle Along the Underground Railroad" with presentations on Margaret Garner (Delores Walters), Canada (Keith Griffler), Free Black Communities (Cheryl LaRoche), and "A Runaway Slave Database" (Prince Brown). Other sessions concern closely related topics in African-American history and abolition history.

The program for the upcoming 2006 OAH/NCPH Annual Meeting (April 19 to April 22, 2006) is now available online at http://www.oah.org/meetings/2006/ .
