NATIONAL TRUST BLACK HISTORY MONTH LECTURE: DR. SPENCER CREW, NATIONAL UNDERGROUND FREEDOM CENTER TO SPEAK IN WASHINGTON, DC, FEBRUARY 10

Dr. Spencer Crew, Executive Director to the Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Washington, DC, will give the National Trust's annual Black History Month Lecture, on February 10, 2004, at 6:30, at True Reformer Building, 1200 U Street N.W., Washington. UNDERGROUND RAILROAD CONFERENCE AT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, FEBRUARY 13, 2004

The Department of African-American Studies and the Charles Blockson Archives present their First Annual Underground Railroad Conference on the theme of "The U.S. Constitution, Civil Liberties and the Underground Railroad" on Friday, February 13, 2004, in the Main Campus Student Activities Center, Rooms 301/303 at Temple University. University parking is available at Cecil B. Moore and 11th Street. Mr. Charles Blockson will deliver the keynote address, "The Constitution and the Fugitive Slaves." There will also be presentations by G. Craig Caba, "Battle of Gettysburg, Anti-Slavery Movement and Thaddeus Stevens," George F. Nagle, "Kidnapping and Murder: How the Rachel Parker Case Galvanized Pennsylvania Popular Opinion Against the Fugitive Slave Law," Lama Workenyor and Daud M. Watts, "Fugitive Slave Laws and Victorious Consciousness," Roderick L. Lee and Cecelia Merkel, "GeospatialTools and Underground Railroad History," Christopher Densmore, "The Role of God's Law, Man's Law and Lawyers in Defending Self-Emancipated Freedom Seekers in Pennsylvania and New York, " and Andy Waskie, "Octavius V. Catto: Forgotten Philadelphia Black Hero of the Civil War & Civil Rights Struggle."
The conference begins at 8:45 and will be followed by a reception at 5:00.

The 27th Annual Conference on Black History in Pennsylvania will take place April 15-17, 2004 in Indiana, PA.
