Who's Who in Pennsylvania's Underground Railroad

The following listings are documentation of the African American community in Pottsville, a thriving mining town near the center of Schuylkill County.  Located at a spot where the Schuylkill River cuts through the mountain on its way south, Pottsville was an important stopping place on the Underground Railroad network.  James Gillingham, a Quaker from Bucks County, sheltered fugitives at his home on Mahantongo Street, before sending them further north, to agents in Wilkes-Barre.

Pottsville's Northwest Ward had the largest concentration of African Americans, numbering 149 men, women and children, living in 39 separate dwellings.  Two of the dwellings were shared by two distinct families, as determined by the census enumerator.  Twenty-four of those dwellings had at least one person with a surname different from the head of the household, indicating the presence of a possible blended family, extended family members, servants, apprentices or boarders. 

In comparison, the Northeast Ward had less than one-tenth the Black population--14 African American citizens in four dwellings--yet was the location of Gillingham's home.  The South Ward had 47 African American residents, eleven of whom lived with their employer, either in a private home or at a hotel.  In all, Pottsville was home to more than 200 African Americans in 1850, three-quarters of whom were living relatively close together in the Northeast Ward.  This concentration may have allowed fugitives to blend in with the local population, particularly if they were sent to the neighborhoods in the northeastern portion of the city.
