holding a symposium on the Underground Railroad, Abolitionism, and Slavery
in Virginia, entitled "Unboxing the Past," on Thursday, October 9, 2003, in
honor of the recently publication of The Unboxing of Henry Box Brown by

CHILLICOTHE, OHIO: FRIENDS OF FREEDOM ANNUAL
SUMMIT, OCTOBER 17-19, 2003
The Friends of Freedom's Eight Annual Summit is being held this year in
Chillicothe, Ohio. In addition to presentations on Underground Railroad
research in Ohio, the program will include a talk by Clifford Boxley on
Mississippi and Louisiana, and a keynote address by Dr. Norrece T. Jones,

On Saturday, October 18 Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and Harpers
Ferry Historical Association, along with the National Underground Railroad
Network to Freedom will sponsor an Education Adventure focusing on African
American history. Free of charge and open to the public, this program will
be held at Mather Training Center, Harpers Ferry, West Virginia from 9:30
a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Registration is required, as space is limited to 45

that is celebrated in art, literature, and journalism has become a symbol
of American idealism and fervor to activists along the political spectrum.
3-4:00 pm: Author Jean Libby presents forensic research on John Brown's
portraits that she has been coordinating through Louisiana State University.

This year's annual conference of the Pennsylvania Historical Association

chaired by Robert Engs, University of Pennsylvania, with papers by Beverly
Tomeck, University of Huston, on the Pennsylvania Auxiliary Chapter of the
American Colonization Society, by Angela Murphy, University of Huston,
on "Seeking 'Perfect Liberty': Abolitionist Attempts to Link Irish
Nationalism and American Antislavery in Pennsylvania," and by David Smith,
Pennsylvania State University, on "Abolitionists, Underground Railroad
Workers, Slave Catchers, and Colonizationists: Examining the Demographics
of Pennsylvania's Conflict over the Fugitive Slave."
