In memory of what was called "OLD HAGAR," an old
colored lady who had been a slave of Wm. Campbell, but was freed by him at his death in 1801.
She died May the 11th, 1854, supposed to be 105

From Hagar's 1782 registration record, we know that she was actually
closer to age 86 at death, and not 105 years old, as local legend, and her
tombstone, state.

make known that as administratrix of William Carter deceased and in my own
right I have authorized Ralph St. John to sell a negro boy named
Jerry, now a little upwards of twenty years of age, who is bound to serve until
he becomes twenty eight years of age. And my said Attorney having accordingly
sold him to Henry Clay for the price of One hundred and twenty five dollars,
I do hereby ratify and confirm the said sale.

of Washington County, Pennsylvania, that Ruth Carter, of Amwell Township, in
that county was the owner of the Negro, Jerry, Aged twenty years and three months,
a servant until the age of twenty-eight years, and that she was moving him to
Wheeling, Virginia, with his consent as evidenced under private examination.

Slave Notes: Henry was listed as a bequest in the 1859 will of Edmund Davis. At the time of the writing of the will, Henry was living with Henry Sherliff, of Orleans, Allegany County, Maryland. Davis stipulated that Henry be hired out until he had returned enough money to pay his value of six hundred dollars to the beneficiaries named in the will, as well as any expenses and claims charged to him or to the estate of Edmund Davis. After that, Henry was to be manumitted in Maryland, or if prohibited, then brought to Pennsylvania and manumitted, if this suited the executor of the will.
The beneficiaries named were the Trustees of the Methodist Protestant Church, in Washington, who were to receive five sixths of Henry's value, or five hundred dollars, and Rev. William H. Phipps, pastor of the church, one sixth, or one hundred dollars. Rev. Phipps was also named as the executor of the will.

Boyd Crumrine published the following legal notice, which
explains how Hannah received her freedom:"Know all men by these presents that whereas I James Edgar of Smiths township and county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania being on the twenty-sixth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-two in the township and county aforesaid possessed of a negroe girl as a slave and then of the age of five years did register the said girl being of the name of Hannah on the said day and so described in the office of the office of the Clerk of the Sessions of the said County according to the Act of Assembly of Pennsylvania for the Gradual abolition of slavery whereby the said Negroe girl Hanna remained a slave to the said James Edgar and whereas I am under a serious conviction that involuntary servitude beyond a just compensation for maintenance and education is incompatible with a sense of duty to God and my fellow-creatures. I the said James Edgar do hereby release and forever quit claim to the said Hannah all my right or claim or all right and claim which any may derive under me to the time or service of the said Hannah after she shall have arrived at the age of twenty-seven years and do hereby declare that the said negroe woman Hanna as soon as she shall arrive at the age of twenty-seven years shall be and thereafter remain entirely free. In witness whereof I have hereto set my hand and seal this sixth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety-six.
