Chester County Anonymous Slave Sales

Newspaper Notices for Enslaved Persons Offered for Sale

  • An un-named term slave for sale on a farm
"FOR SALE, THE time of a Negro Boy, who has six or seven years to serve. He is strong, healthy, active & remarkably intelligent, and would be an acquisition to a farmer, who would find him regular work. Enquire at the Office of the Village Record. April 7."
Source: The Village Record (West Chester), 21 April 1824.
Notes: If held to the typical 28-year-term, the person advertised would be 21 or 22 years old, born between 1802 and 1803. This example of an anonymous slave sale ad is rare due to it's time period for this county, appearing in the middle 1820s.
