About The Data
Each listing represents a record of one
Black enslaved person or indentured servant (more on terminology below). The
list is sorted alphabetically according to the owner's surname. I felt
that this order would be the most useful for several reasons. It groups
slaves together who would have lived with the same owner, and increases
the likelihood of finding persons related to each other. Records of
slave surnames are rare, many being identified only through their given
name. You can search this listing for a specific slave given name by
using your browser's Find feature.
Dates of birth for the slaves, unless
specified in the original documents, have been calculated by
subtracting their given age from the date of the record. Very often,
their ages as reported in the original records are given as approximations
(such as "about 25 years of age"), indicated by a lower
case a following their age. The term Status refers to
the slave's relative freedom. Unless specified otherwise, slaves served "for
life" prior to Pennsylvania's Gradual Emancipation
Act of 1780. Children born to slave mothers after the passage of
that legislation were to serve until age 28, which was much of their
productive lives.
The term Description refers to the
main description of the slave as given in the original source (including
misspellings). This is often a means by which enslaved persons were categorized according to race and relative age. Source numbers
correspond to the accompanying list of sources used
in compiling these records.
Terminology, and Other Notes
The terms "slave" and "servant" were often
used interchangeably, especially in the earliest years of the time
period covered in this study. After the Gradual
Emancipation Act of 1780 was passed in Pennsylvania, the term "servant" frequently
came to mean either someone in indentured servitude or someone employed
by the head of the household. The passage from slave to servant was
often indistinct for many Blacks, many of whom remained with their
former owners after being legally emancipated. For simplicity, the term "slave" is used to represent all people who were
in bondage, even though some records list them as "servants."
The locations listed for the slaveholders, especially City
or Township are greatly mixed, and represent the location listed
in the original record. As township boundaries shifted and new townships
and counties were created, the original listing may not align with modern boundaries.

Description:
Notes: John had been jailed in Newtown as a suspected escaped slave. He claimed he was serving with a Continental Army regiment. He broke out of jail along with a white man named Peter Eaton, and jailer Gregg placed the following notice in Philadelphia newspapers to recover them. From the phrasing of the escape notice, it seems as if Gregg expected the two men to travel together:
Newtown, Bucks County, June 28, 1780.
Two Hundred Dollars Reward.
BROKE Goal last night the two following persons, viz. PETER EATON, twenty-six years of age, near six feet high, dark brown hair, a little pitted with the small pox; had on a pale blue coat and waistcoat, mixed blue and white dimity breeches, shoes with odd buckles, and a small castor hat. Both of his ears have lately been crop'd for horse-stealing.
Likewise a Negroe man, who calls himself JOHN, and says he belongs to the Continental army, Colonel Bradley's regt. of New-England troops. He had with him, when committed, an old bay horse, about 13 and a half hands high, branded C. A. The owner (if any there be) is desired to come, pay charges, and take the horse away, otherwise he will be sold to pay the charges.
The said Negroe is about 25 years of age, had on a red coat and waistcoat, wore threadbare, without lining, green breeches buttoned up the sides, a castor hat that has been turned, a pair of old pumps, one of them tied, the other buckled.
They stole and carried off with them out of the goal yard, two shirts, one pair of new ribbed thread stockings, one pair worsted ditto, and one linen handkerchief. Whoever takes up and secures them, so that they may be had again, shall have the above reward, and reasonable charges, or one hundred dollars for either of them, paid by
JAMES GREGG, Goaler.
The mentioned regiment, from which John says he escaped, could be the 5th Connecticut Regiment, commanded by Col. Philip Burr Bradley, which saw service in the New York and New Jersey compaigns between 1777 and 1781.

Notes: From J. H. Battle, History of Bucks County, page 446: "The celebrity of Gilbert Hicks is of a less enviable character, he was high sheriff of the county in 1776 and an ardent tory. Even after the declaration of independence had been promulgated he proclaimed the opening of court in the name of the king. This offended the patriotic citizens beyond measure. A large number of people assembled at Newtown, then the county-seat, on the first day of the session. Hicks was then living at Four Lanes’ Ends and had sufficient discretion to remain at his home. A number of his friends mingled with the crowd to discover the drift of their deliberations, while a negro slave was mounted on a fleet horse to apprise him of the result. When it was learned that the popular indignation was such as to endanger his life the negro started for home with this intelligence as fast as be could go. When his object became apparent several horsemen started in hot pursuit, but failed to overtake him. It is said that Hicks was secreted in the garret of a neighbor for several days, but finally made his escape to Nova Scotia, when the British government rewarded his loyalty with a gift of land and an annual pension."
