WILLIAM STONER, COLORED WAR VETERAN, DIES
William Stoner, colored, veteran of the Civil War, died at his home, 67 West Chapel Avenue, Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock. He was 78 years old.
The deceased was born in Franklin County and later moved to Cumberland. He was a member of Co. H. Mass., Regulars, U.S.C.T. He fought in the battle of Lustia and Honey Hill and was engaged in other battles. He received an honorable discharge at the close of the war. He was a member of Post 440 G.A.R. and only a few weeks ago was elected quartermaster of the post. He was a faithful member of the Pomfret street A.M.E. Church.
He is survived by one daughter, Sally Stoner and one niece, Mary Ellen McAbee of Mercersburg. (Carlisle Evening Herald, 7 January 1916.)
Death also reported in the Harrisburg Telegraph, 08 January 1916. Cause of death was listed as "the grip," a reference to the deadly influenza epidemic of 1915-1916. His name was reported as William B. Stoner.
