Slave Status Manumitted at age 16, Indentured to age 28
Slave Notes It is unclear why Isaac Brown Parker legally manumitted Richard, then drew up a deed of indenture to bind the former slave to serve until his twenty-eighth birthday. Richard would have been bound for that length of time anyway under the Gradual Emancipation Act of 1780. According to the indenture, Parker paid Richard the sum of one dollar at the time of the indenture, and agreed to outfit him with "one Suit of Apparel which shall be new" upon the expiration of the indenture.
The date of birth for Richard should be considered approximate, and may have been fixed upon at the time of the indenture, as he is described in the indenture as "aged about Sixteen years." To read the entire document, click on the hyperlinked source, below.

RAN AWAY on the 27th of July last, from the subscriber near Carlisle, in Cumberland county, Pennsylvania, a Mulatto slave named JOE, twenty years old, five feet eight or nine inches high, thick and well set; had on a tow shirt and trowsers, new shoes and buckles, and a wool hat. Also a Negro man named JAMES, thirty years old, five feet ten inches high, slender made; had on a tow shirt and trowsers, old felt hat, and half-worn shoes. Whoever takes up said slaves and secures them in any gaol, so that their master may have them again, shall have the above reward, or Twenty-five Pounds for each, paid by
PAUL PEIRCE.
August 6.
Peirce may have captured Joe, but not James, as he later ran addidtional advertisements seeking only James, and in which he eventually upped the reward to 100 Pounds and added as a contact "RICHARD MOORE, in Third street, next door to the Bunch of Grapes tavern." In February, Peirce advertised for only James, perhaps suggesting he had recaptured Joe. Text of February follow up runaway slave advertisement for James:
"FIFTY POUNDS Reward.
RAN away, the 27th of July last, from the subscriber, in Cumberland county, near Carlisle, a Negroe Man, named JAMES, 35 years old, 5 feet 10 inches high, slender made, of a spare visage, and one of his legs a little thicker about the small than the other. Slave Notes Originally registered by William Kelso in Carlisle in 1789, Cloe passed to Kelso's daughter Rebeckah sometime after his death. Rebeckah transferred Cloe to John Harland, a Philadelphia merchant, in 1794, who sold the girl to Peter Gerandan for 118 Spanish milled dollars. Gerandan sold Cloe two months later to L. Crousillat, who sold her in 1795 to Oliver Pollack, all for the same 118 Spanish milled dollars. Pollack sold the girl in November, 1796, to Andrew Carothers for sixty pounds.
